"Laurencia" is an homage to the Soviet-era feature length ballet films of the 1940s through the 80s. These films were shot on sound stages that allowed for a freedom of camera movement that is not possible when shooting in the theater. Two of the ballets, Galatea (1974) and Anyuta (1982), were choreographed specifically for film. Anyuta was later adapted for the stage from the film—a first for an evening length ballet. "Laurencia" is a variation from the ballet of the same name choreographed by Vakhtang Chabukiani.
